(eds.), Agent-Based Models of Geographical Systems, DOI 10.1007/978-90-481-8927-4_17, © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2012 Abstract Designing, formulating, and communicating agent-based models (ABMs) poses unique challenges, especially how to choose the right level of c mplexity and how to describe – and, even, think about – a model in a way that captures both its essential characteristics and its complete detail. Two techniques for dealing with such challenges have become established among agent-based modellers. The “ODD” (Overview, Design concepts, Details) protocol is a standard for describing ABMs in publications, but also provides design patterns for the model developer. ODD starts with an overview of what the model is and does, and then describes how the model implements ten “design concepts” that capture essential and unique characteristics of ABMs. Last come all the details needed to completely replicate the model. “Pattern-oriented modelling” (POM) is a set of strategies for using patterns observed in the systems to ensure that an ABM captures the right “essence” of the system. POM starts with identifying multiple patterns of behaviour in the real system and its agents that seem to capture the essential internal mechanisms for the problem being modelled. These patterns are then used to decide what kinds of entities, state variables, and processes need to be in the model; compare and test alternative “theory” for key agent behaviours; and filter potential parameter values to limit uncertainty. ODD and POM are important steps toward the acceptance of agent-based approaches as established, credible ways to do science.

Modeling and Interacting with Agents in Mixed Environments
We adopt the decision-theoretic principle of expected utility maximization as a paradigm for designing autonomous rational agents operating in multi-agent and mixed environments. Our approach is based on explicitly modeling other agents, human or artificial. The advantage of our approach is that explicit models are the most comprehensive tools one can use to guide meaningful interactions. The d...
متن کاملModel-Based Development of Intelligent Communicating Agents for Multi-Agent Systems
An intelligent communicating agent has both the properties of intelligent agents and communicating agents, which are autonomy, reactivity, proactiveness and sociability. In this paper, we propose a modelbased approach to designing and implementing intelligent communicating agents for multi-agent systems (MAS). As background knowledge for our approach, we first briefly introduce the agent-orient...
متن کاملFormulating optimal marketing scenarios by Agent Based simulation approach (Case study: Tejarat Bank)
In recent years, the banking industry has witnessed great changes in the field of competition, which has led to the rise of market share and the attraction of customer concern to many of the managers in the banking industry. In the same vein, banks are always struggling to achieve a desirable position by utilizing new approaches to marketing in a competitive environment. Due to this importance,...
متن کاملA Context-aware Architecture for Mental Model Sharing through Semantic Movement in Intelligent Agents
Recent studies in multi-agent systems are paying increasingly more attention to the paradigm of designing intelligent agents with human inspired concepts. One of the main cognitive concepts driving the core of many recent approaches in multi agent systems is shared mental models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for sharing mental models based on a new concept called semantic movement....
متن کاملModal Logics for Communicating Rule-Based Agents
In this paper, we show how to establish correctness and time bounds (e.g., quality of service guarantees) for multi-agent systems composed of communicating rule-based agents. The formal models of multi-agent systems we study are transition systems where each transition corresponds to either a rule firing or an act of communication by an agent. We present a complete and sound modal logic which f...
